component picture! what a difference!

Postby fanuminski on Tue Feb 15, 2011 12:01 am

Ok with the help of Peter
( see the archives: archives/viewtopic8dca.html?f=3&t=420)

I purchased the two items I needed and am absolutely blown
away by the picture on my older 52" Rear Projection TV!

I have an older Genesis 1 model and use headphones so I only needed
the transcoder and the scart cable.
I think I spent about $80 total - but the picture is fantastic!
Being colorblind makes it even harder for me so this improvement
in clarity is greatly welcomed!
I wish I had know about this years ago! (thanks Peter!!)

I'll try and post some before and after pics this week -

-M
OK- took some pics - keep in mind that, for some reason, I always get horizontal "lines"
when taking digital camera shots of my tv. They are not present except on the camera!
Also, I didn't alter the pics at all for sharpness - just equally darkened each one
a bit to show up better.

Absolutely fantastic. If pier solar wasnt so damn hard I'd play it through again once I can afford a component setup.

Im still fighting with myself if I want to HDMI mod a model 2 or if I just wanna get a new RGB scart setup for all my old devices with a switch.

On the screenshots you see very good that it's to sharp for the dithering to work. Look at the shadows.

Before I got component, I was limited to composite. Even with composite, I could always spot dithering a mile away. It does not blend the way some people think it does unless you have the crappest of crap TVs. For that reason component seems so much better to me (though your pictures aren't very good as they show horizontal bars and a strange color difference... my component picture is not pink).

As a former projectionist, I do not like blurry things so composite simply will not do.

I have had component for a while, I have a 52 projection tv myself and it looks fantastic. On my 27 inch composite looks pretty good really.

Composite on my TV with the CDX actually looks really good.

On my Hitachi rear projection 52" 720P the picture is superb. Those horizontal lines are not visible!
Only when I take pictures do they show up on the digital shots. Even when I took pictures of my older
CRT 27" tv, I would get those horizontal lines. I can even see the lines through the viewfinder -
although they are not on the screen/tv itself!
I've tried taking pictures with and without the flash, and still can't get rid of those lines showing up.
I'll try again this weekend to take a few more shots of the menu screens etc...
All I can say is that the component hookup is much more crisp - I sit 10 -12 feet away on my couch
and have a big smile on my face now - I can see everything so much clearer!

It's some kind of motion blur. The TV is "drawing" line by line on the screen. You need a very short exposure time to get rid of them or you need to syncronize the camera with the TV's horizontal retrace.

Those are just scan lines. Tube tvs have them. Most of the time not really noticable to the eyes however cameras capture them because they're taking a p icture at faster speed than your eyes can see.

The lines are sync issues with the camera vs the TV. Nothing to worry about, it just makes the pictures look bad. You can't see them with the naked eye.

Also, I've noticed pictures of dithered transparencies blur better than they actually do when looking at the TV with the naked eye.
