Graphics on LCD HDTV? How to improve.

Postby ericsprau on Mon Jan 31, 2011 12:36 pm

I don't know if it just isn't because I haven't dusted off the hardware in so long or what, but the graphics seem...well, worse than what I remember them being as a child!

Especially so considering the screenshots of the game included online and in packaging. US Model 1 Genny with Model 2 SCD. Suggestions?

where are you living and which kind of TV are you using?

Mega Drive/ Genesis works best on a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) TV, the old-fashioned ones. Using it on a LCD or Plasma TV can cause lots of problems, one of which is poor image quality.

If you are in Europe, I would advise you to get an RGB video cable. You simply get the very best image quality that is possible to achieve with the Sega consoles.

US, NTSC, using RCA cable (as you suggested). LCD HDTV. Dun have a CRT.

Would getting a Model 2 or 3 enable usage of S-Video cables or better image output?

Nope.

I would suggest you to read this thread over at Sega16.com :

Bear in mind that getting a used but in good condition CRT is very cheap nowadays (you can probably find one for 10 or 20 bucks), and that going the other route (converting your analog signal from the Genesis to digital for HDMI) can be expensive and may need some tweaking.

RCA is not RGB.

Elaborate please? :)

CRT does indeed solve problem, but I haven't got the space. I've already considered the HDMI transcoding alternative.

RCA is only a type of cable/jack. It can be used for composite or component:

Component cable can output YPbPr or RGB video signal.

So RGB is a video signal, traditionally obtained (for the last 20 years in Europe) through a scart cable:

RGB/scart is usually considered the best quality a retro system can give. This includes Master System, Mega Drive, Saturn, SNES... even Dreamcast, PS2 and Xbox if connected to a CRT. If connected to a plasma/LCD, Dreamcast can use VGA, while PS2 and Xbox can use component. Dreamcast will most definitely look the best of the tree on a plasma/LCD if using VGA.

Uh... sorry for my english

I didn't even notice that our friend wrote RCA instead of RGB.

This kind of troubleshooting isn't related to Pier Solar, so I've moved the thread to "off topic".
